For more than forty years the cost of food has been rising. It has now reached a point where a growing number of people believe that it is far too high, and that bringing it down will be one of the great challenges of the twenty-first century. That cost, however is not in immedinte cash. In the West at least, most food is now far cheaper to buy in relative terms than it was in 1960. The cost is in the collateral damage of the very methods of food producties that have made the food cheapers in the pollution of water. In enervation of soil, the destruction of wildlife, the harm to animal welfare and the threat to human health caused by moders industrial agriculture.

Prepositional Phrase

দুই বা ততোধিক শব্দ যদি একটিমাত্র Preposition-এর মতো ব্যবহৃত হয় তবে তাকে Prepositional Phrase বলে । অনুরূপভাবে, কোনো Simple Preposition তার পরবর্তী Noun/Noun Phrase সহ Prepositional Phrase গঠন করতে পারে।

He was absent on account of illness.
Raihan stood in front of me.
We were waiting for the bus.

Prepositional Phrase হলো এমন একগুচ্ছ শব্দ যা একটি Preposition দিয়ে শুরু হয় এবং সাধারণত একটি Noun বা Pronoun (যাকে Object of the preposition বলা হয়) দিয়ে শেষ হয়। বাক্যে এটি মূলত Adjective অথবা Adverb হিসেবে কাজ করে।

১. গঠন (Structure):

Preposition + Object (Noun/Pronoun) + Modifiers (যদি থাকে)

উদাহরণ: In (Preposition) the room (Object).
উদাহরণ: On the red table.

২. বাক্যে ব্যবহারের ধরন:

ক) Adjective হিসেবে (Adjective Phrase):

যখন এটি কোনো Noun বা Pronoun সম্পর্কে অতিরিক্ত তথ্য দেয়। এটি সাধারণত সেই Noun-এর ঠিক পরেই বসে।

উদাহরণ: The book on the table is mine.
ব্যাখ্যা: এখানে 'on the table' অংশটি 'book' (Noun)-কে বর্ণনা করছে।

খ) Adverb হিসেবে (Adverbial Phrase):

যখন এটি কোনো Verb-এর কাজ কখন, কোথায় বা কীভাবে ঘটছে তা বোঝায়।

উদাহরণ: He is sleeping under the tree.
ব্যাখ্যা: এখানে 'under the tree' অংশটি ঘুমানোর স্থান (Verb-কে বিশেষায়িত) বোঝাচ্ছে।
